Quick savings tip for contact lenses

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

If you normally use an all-in-one contact solution, you can do the final rinse in the morning with saline.  Saline is usually half the cost of the no-rub solutions and some people find it more comfortable to put in their eyes.  Yes, you have two bottles rather than one, but you might save enough each month to treat yourself to a latte or two.

Toaster Waffles

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Last weekend I made a batch of waffles.  I’ve been switching some things over to organic and/or whole grain so I had a new box of “baking mix”.  I planned to mix it half and half with Bisquick until we got used to it, so I was merging two recipes (the new kind has less fat so includes more oil in the recipe) to make waffles.  In the process of doing that, I forgot that I usually halve the recipe for the two of us.  Two cups of baking mix makes a lot of waffles…so I decided to cook up the rest of the mix and put them in the freezer.

I tried them today and I’m happy to report that they work great in the toaster.  They were fairly brown, so next time I won’t cook the waffles as much before I freeze them, but other than that they were great!  I may do the full batch on purpose next time so I’ll have something quick and easy stored up for breakfast.

Reduce Catalog Clutter

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

I’ve discovered a quick way to reduce impulse spending and clutter: a website called Catalog Choice.  It’s a free service that claims to let you decline catalogs.  It can take up to 10 weeks, so you won’t see an immediate improvement, but it should cut down on the junk mail you get.  I “declined” a series of catalogs a couple weeks ago, and have only seen one more from one of those companies (which might have already been in the mail before I declined it).

Refund of Some Overseas Fees…

Friday, December 7th, 2007

I got a strange piece of mail yesterday, and almost tossed it since I get approx 3 pieces of campaign spam every day (the joys of living in NH…I’m guessing Iowa is the same).  Luckily I opened it, since it’s the form for claiming a piece of the settlement for Visa/Mastercard overcharging on foreign transactions.

Madame X of My Open Wallet has a post with more details.

Quick Money Saving Tip: Stamps

Monday, November 19th, 2007

My Dollar Plan has a few tips for saving money on postage stamps.  Another tip is to use online billpay to avoid having to mail payments.  Since I’m switching to ING’s Electric Orange account, I won’t have paper checks to mail and will have to do it all automatically.
